BryanLGH Epidemiologist Shawn Mueller Receives National Infection Control Award
The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), together with Covidien, has named Shawn Mueller as one of 14 infection prevention and control professionals and epidemiologists (ICPs) as their 2008 Third Annual Heroes of Infection Prevention Award winners. The Heroes have been recognized by their peers for the significant strides made against life-threatening healthcare-associated infections, and for achievements in the area of patient safety worldwide.
The criteria for selection included the areas of education, patient safety, advocacy and influence, process and systems improvement, program development and cost savings.
Mueller’s housewide implementation of an antimicrobial impregnated gauze dressing led to a 24.1 percent reduction in surgical-site infections and cut methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus infection rates by almost half for a cost savings of over $500,000, post implementation. Mueller received her award at the APIC National Convention in June and will be featured in the Covidien calendar in November.
