Our treatment team also has expertise to treat older adults for the additional unique issues they often face. Forgetfulness, inability to concentrate, withdrawal from friends or activities, decreased energy and fatigue is often thought to be part of growing older. But they may be signs of a treatable mental health condition. Many factors can lead to mental health concerns in older adults, such as:
- Stress and loss – the loss of loved ones, health, physical abilities, financial stability.
- Genetics – some people have a biological vulnerability that may be triggered due to the aging process.
- Medical conditions – conditions such as heart disease, cancer and nutrition deficiencies can create symptoms of mental health conditions; some medications may cause interactions leading to mood changes.

Partial and Inpatient Hospitalization
A psychiatrist will be consulted to determine the most appropriate level of care, and if needed, will admit and supervise treatment. Treatment team members include a psychiatrist, therapists, nurses, mental health technicians, recreation therapists, dieticians, teachers, chaplain and other community professionals as necessary.
Partial hospitalization
This option provides therapy and treatment for people who need more attention than seeing a mental health professional weekly but do not need around-the-clock inpatient hospitalization. Treatment takes place in the Counseling Center during the day; you return home in the evening. Length of stay is about three to five days, based on treatment progress.
Inpatient hospitalization
This is the most appropriate option for persons who have difficulty managing behaviors without the monitoring, support and safety an inpatient environment provides. Following an assessment, an interdisciplinary team will work with the patient to develop a treatment plan and achieve treatment goals. This plan includes individual and group therapies as well as physical, biological, behavioral, nutritional, spiritual and social aspects to best meet each person’s needs. Our goal is to provide treatment in a short-stay setting and transition patients and families to the ongoing care and/or support needed. The average length of stay is three days.
Inpatient care takes place on three separate units. Each unit is designed with patient safety and comfort in mind.
- Affective disorders unit – Patients on this unit benefit from a “cognitive therapy” model which includes individual and group therapy. These methods focus on development of insight and overcoming individual difficulties. This includes, but is not limited to, eliminating negative thought patterns, building therapeutic relationships and reducing uncomfortable emotions.
- Senior mental health unit – The BryanLGH senior mental unit, the only one of its kind in the region, includes a specialized treatment team and facility for persons age 55 and over. Services include crisis stabilization; individual, group and family therapy; recreational, occupational and physical therapy; and medication management.
- Adult psychiatric unit –This unit provides care for individuals with a variety of mental health difficulties. Services include crisis stabilization; individual, group and family therapy; recreational, occupational and physical therapy; and medication management.
Before dismissal, aftercare options are discussed with the patient and family, patient appointments are made and long-range treatment goals are reinforced.
