Neurology is a vast field of medicine. BryanLGH provides a variety of treatments for neuro patients, including:
Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty
These are image-guided, minimally-invasive nonsurgical therapies that strengthen a broken spinal bone that has been weakened by osteoporosis, or less commonly, cancer. The procedures can increase your ability to function in everyday life and prevent further damage to your spine. Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty also help ease pain caused by compression fractures. The procedures often are done on an outpatient basis.
Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt
Treatment for normal pressure hydrocephalus patients. In hydrocephalus, the ventricles of the brain become enlarged with fluid. This causes brain tissue to compress against the skull, causing serious neurological problems. Shunting, also called ventriculoperitoneal shunting, is done to drain the excess fluid and relieve pressure in the brain.
Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is when ventricles in the brain enlarge without accompanying increased pressure in the brain. Symptoms include: altered mental status, trouble with walking and urinary incontinence. It is often misdiagnosed as dementia. If NPH is diagnosed, a shunt can be placed to drain the cerebrospinal fluid, thus decreasing the size of the ventricles and relieving the symptoms, returning patients to a better quality of life.
Deep Brain Stimulation
Stereotactic thalamotomy can now be performed in a non-invasive manner using the Gamma Knife®, which is a focused radiation device. The Gamma Knife® can be used to perform either thalamotomy or pallidotomy, which are procedures to treat tremors. Deep brain stimulation, which places electrodes into specific areas of the brain and is attached to an implant under the skin similar to a heart pacemaker, can be used to control tremor, rigidity and bradykinesia (slowness of movement).
